Welcome Rocky Grass Fans!  July 2008

Sundays this month start off with July 6th and The Last Honky-Tonk Band reunited members from the venerable Dusty Drapes and the Dusters, despite their name this was probably the first honky-tonk band from the area and these guys still can kick butt.

Sunday the 13th marks the return of one of Oskar's all-time favorites The Sunny Sweeney Band www.sunnysweeney.com from Texas. Sunny has a killer voice and has lots of fun from the stage. She is one of the top newcomers in the field and is going straight to the top of the charts don't miss her.

Felonius Smith www.feloniussmith.com and his acoustic blues trio will be back at Oskar's on the 20th for their version of old time country blues .

The last Sunday is the 27th the last day of Rockygrass and will feature The Packway Handle band www.packwayhandleband.com from Athens, Georgia these guys are great musicians and vocalist. We sure enjoy their gospel-tinged bluegrass and this will be the third year they grace the stage at Oskar's during Rockygrass they will be playing Saturday the 26th also. Read "The Band to Watch" feature on PHB in the April 2008 edition of Bluegrass Now Magazine and you won't have to take my word for how good they are.
While we are talking about Rockygrass how about Spring Creek bluegrass band www.springcreekbluegrass.com on Friday the 25th, the only band to win both The Rockygrass and Telluride competitions in the same year, while Chris Elliott wins the banjo competition last year. Talk about on the top this band is over the top and one of the finest bluegrass bands in the nation.

On Thursday of Rockygrass the 24th will be a very special night with Pete Kartsounses www.petekmusic.com www.petekmusic.com and friends holding a benefit show for kids with cancer www.hike4cancer.com joined by members of the Incredible Stringdusters it will be a great night of bluegrass and more. Pete will be hiking 500 miles for the kids and money from this show goes to the kids, so come on over and support these kids and hear some great music.

Thursday the 3rd we will have The Runnin' Late bluegrass band www.runninlate.com a new bluegrass band started by Joe Turmun from White Water Ramble, a hot six piece outfit doing Mountain String Music.

The 10th will feature Todd Adelman and The Lovehandles www.toddadelman.com featuring Greg Schockett and Bret Billings from the Hi-Beams; Todd was very influenced by bob Dylan, Hank Williams and Gram parsons.

Thursday the 17th will mark the long-awaited return of Dennis Stroughmatt www.dennisstroughmatt.com. This time with a four piece acoustic band called et L' Esprit Creole. Last time here Dennis did a show at Lyons High School for the music students revolving around French Cajun music. He is a great fiddler and accordion player who is a wonderful singer who sings many songs in French.

On the 31st Jon Ridnell aka Blackdog www.blackdogband.com will do a bluegrass show with Country Blackdog. Now a resident of Lyons, Jon has been influenced by all the great bluegrass pickers around him and has lent his great guitar prowess to this style of music and it sounds real good.

Friday the 4th of July we will have Gretchen Troop formally of the Shaman's at Oskar's with her new band The Gretchen Troop band www.gretchentroopband.com/singer Gretchen is joined by Randall Dubis on guitar and Jodie Woodward on bass. She is an exceptional vocalist who spent time in New York City and San Francisco honing her trade, and very well I might add.

The 5th will be the return of Paul Soderman with Blueze Hause a 7- piece horn band. Some of you might remember Paul and the Boulder Blues Club one of the first boulder area Blues band to make it big around here. Paul's voice is described as a cross between Joe Cocker and Delbert McClinton.

Friday the 11th will be a great night of funk and dancing. Harmonius Junk www.harmoniusjunk.com will be here with James Brown's bass player. Damon Wood former guitarist with James Brown is having a CD release party for their new record entitled "Too Cocky in Nagasaki" with The Godfather of Soul's bass player Fred Taylor this show will be jumping from start to finish. If you like the funk you know where to be.

Saturday the 12th it will be one of our favorite local bands Maynard Mills, www.maynardmillsblues.com Maynard always pays his respects to the old masters with his repertoire of classic blues and funk tunes and may even play some old style dobro slide guitar as well.

The Devil Boy Eddie Turner www.eddiedevilboy.com will play on Friday the 18th. Squeezing one show in Colorado between a long tour of the Southwest and California in the next couple of months. Eddie was voted best new blues act in 2006 come on over and see why. He is a monster on the guitar ala Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan.

The Teresa Lynne band www.mistressoftheblues.com will be at Oskar's on Saturday the 19th for the first time in many years; Teresa is a fine harmonica player and sports a very tight band from Denver. She has been described as one of the last Red Hot Mama's come and hear why. That's the month of July in a nutshell; hope to see ya at Oskar's getting your groove on.

Every week this month we have our special Bluegrass pick every Tuesday hosted by K. C. Groves and Eric Thorin. All levels of players are more than welcome. This pick is touted as the best pick in Boulder County so get there early and come often. It starts at 8pm and goes at least until 11pm.

We also host an acoustic plug-in jam every second Monday of the month downstairs from 7:30-10pm hosted by the Colorado Blues Society with Peter Maves, Patrick Cullie and Brian Donnell etc. This is an open stage and everybody is welcome and will get to play so don't miss it.
